<p> St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, led by The Rev. Winnie Varghese, who is an out lesbian, is one of 40 New York landmarks chosen from more than 500 competitors to compete for a portion of $  3 million in grant money marked for historic preservation projects through Partners in Preservation. The landmarks are competing in an online voting contest, and grant money will be awarded based on votes gathered and support demonstrated for each facility.</p>

<p>Varghese is the first openly gay Rector at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, but the church has a long history of supporting gay rights and welcomes all visitors interested in worshiping with the congregation. Rev. Varghese has regularly advocated for gay rights, including equal marriage.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“I’m so proud to be able to lead such a progressive, welcoming congregation,” Varghese said. “It’s an honor to be nominated for this grant, and I’m grateful that I have such a supportive community to call on as we work to win it.”</p>

<p>Under Varghese’s leadership in recent years, the St. Mark’s congregation has experienced rapid growth. The church is the oldest site of continuous worship in New York. A long line of notable architects have contributed to the church’s design, including James Renwick, Jr., the famed architect of the “Castle” in the Smithsonian Institute and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. If successful in the contest, St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery plans to use the grant funds to restore the circa 1858 cast iron portico that serves as the church’s entry way. The cast iron in the portico is attributed to James Bogardus, noted early proponent and innovator of cast iron construction.</p>

<p> Elite endurance athlete Christian Burke announced today that the third annual running of “The Hermosa 24” will take place the weekend of June 30th in Hermosa Beach, Calif.  The 24-hour run in the sand welcomes amateur and elite runners, and students of all ages to run in either the solo or relay category to vie for a Guinness World Record® originally set in the inaugural race by Christian, and broken last year by endurance runner Patrick Sweeney, while raising money for local schools. Adding to the excitement of the weekend, the Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer Organization asked to share the beach with The Hermosa 24 by hosting their Sand Soccer Tournament on the beach alongside Christian’s event.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The Hermosa 24 is a Pier-to-Pier run, from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier.  To secure the Guinness World Record, runners will need to make the nearly 3.4 mile round-trip more than 26 times in the soft sand.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Almost two years ago, Christian set a Guinness World Record at The Hermosa 24 by running in the sand for 83.04 miles in 24 hours. The widely-covered event attracted thousands of curious onlookers and raised nearly $  20,000 for local schools. Last year, with the success behind him, Christian organized the event on the same course, challenging other endurance athletes to compete for the 24-hour World Record. Hundreds came out and competed in solo and team categories on a beautiful beach weekend.  With Christian’s encouragement, Patrick Sweeney took the title and eclipsed the World Record by just a few miles. The event also continued its ultimate goal of raising money for local schools that desperately need the funds to continue quality education programs for well-deserving students.</p>

<p>“Watching my record taken from me last year was bittersweet,” said Christian. “It was sad to see it go, but it went to a well-deserving athlete for whom I have tremendous respect, but I do want my record back!  This year, as the event continues to grow and attracts a field of inspiring athletes, it will be more challenging than ever.  I look forward to channeling the energy of the kids to fuel me to victory again.”</p>

<p>Open to all runners, The Hermosa 24 features a solo runner category where racers will attempt to break the year-old  World Record.  For the many who find that task daunting, Christian is bringing back the popular relay category for teams of up to 10 runners.  Stacking the field are some of the world’s top endurance athletes in the solo category.  In addition, many relay teams have signed up thus far, among them is a team from Los Angeles SWAT.</p>

<p>Christian adds “We are looking for more support than ever this year.  We’re offering a multisport atmosphere with the Los Angeles Galaxy Soccer Organization joining us.  I’m looking forward to an entire weekend of sand and sun as we raise money for education.”</p>

<p>The Hermosa 24 course starts and finishes at the entrance of the Hermosa Beach Pier.  From there, a well marked path in the soft sand will lead runners to the Manhattan Beach Pier (1.7 miles from Pier to Pier) where they will pass under the Pier, then reverse the course tracing the same path back to the Hermosa Beach Pier over and over again for 24 hours.     </p>

On June 19th, 50 international, mostly coed, four-person teams from six countries &#8211; including Denmark, Ecuador, France, and Sweden’s world champions of adventure racing “Thule Adventure Team” – will charge off the starting line in The Forks, Maine to begin a grueling, non-stop, multi-sport expedition. Teams will power hundreds of miles through some of the northeast’s most feral forests, wickedly wild whitewater, and along remote ragged ridgelines.  </p>

<p>Known for their professional expertise in outdoor adventures and in pioneering Maine expeditions, the Northern Outdoor leadership team consulted on this year’s Untamed New England racecourse design, as it did 17 years earlier for Mark Burnett’s 1995 Eco-Challenge. That first Eco-Challenge race was held in Maine’s backcountry as part of ESPN’s X-Games. Burnett, often called the Father of Adventure Racing, is better known these days as the producer of hit TV-shows Survivor, The Voice and Shark Tank.
